Let a police officer come and inspect your equipment, they sign your green form (TR54), bring it to the DMV, make an offline change to your title that says in big bold letters “Off-road use, not titled as a road vehicle” and send it to Lansing. As far as I know, the frame of the standard YZ bike series cannot be registered as road legal. I could be wrong, but from what I`ve collected here, you need a WR frame for the bike to be recordable. Coming from “The Lock-Down State” (California), I was surprised to see what is considered legal on the street in Michigan – dune buggies, golf carts, monster trucks, ANY motorcycle, sand rails – if it has an engine and they can make a dollar out of it, you can fire it in MI. I don`t know what Ohio`s laws are, but every state is different.
People who post “it doesn`t work” need to acknowledge that. In Arizona, you can install just about anything, even quads. Getting away with it on the road is another matter. I haven`t really investigated here in Arkansas, no real interest in DS in the YZ. I also plastered my 450 SX-F, but it`s only good for connecting on roads to get to other trails. After a few months, I simply removed the plaque completely. I drive all the time on the roads to get to the trails and I haven`t had any problems yet. I`ve been more involved with DMV than I`d like to admit. These issues include the recovery of title bikes, off-road versus roadworthy vehicles, etc. They can make you say, “Oh, all you have to do is have a taillight, a horn, a mirror and blinders, etc. and let it inspect and you`re good to go.” It`s not true. First of all, if you have a current title for the motorcycle, it will either be “Off-road use only” or a normal road title. At this speed, you can`t get a motorcycle road ticket with “off-road use only” unless you have a very good friend who works at the DMV. If you don`t have a title, entering the VIN will likely revert to a YZ frame, which will likely be listed under “unrecordable.” I know some people may have sent to some states like Vermont and changed their “for off-road use only” title to a street title.
I`ve heard success stories about it, but I`m sure they`re reducing it. If you want to make your life easier, just buy a bike that already has a legitimate street title. They are not too hard to find. I remember in the year 89, you could drive literally anywhere. Then almost everything was shut down. I lived about 1/2 mile from the Old State House Trail Head in Oscoda and was broken there as a child. Until this happened for Oscoda in July, my dad had to load the quads into the trailer to drive 1/2 mile down the road so he and my mom could drive. From someone who wore a KDX in Michigan, this article is 100% accurate! Aside from the fact that my comfortable extended driving speed was closer to 50 miles per hour, after that, the power valve opened and things got really lively.
